Position Title: Executive Director

Location: Columbus, MS

Reports To: Board of Directors

Position Overview: The Executive Director of the Columbus Arts Council is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial management of the organization. This individual will lead the gallery in fulfilling its mission to promote, support, and enhance the appreciation of contemporary art within the community. The Executive Director will be a visionary leader, advocate for the arts, and an effective manager capable of driving the gallery’s growth and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Leadership:

    • Develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with the gallery’s mission and vision.

    • Foster relationships with artists, donors, sponsors, and the community to enhance the gallery’s profile and influence.

    • Advocate for the gallery and contemporary art within the local, regional, and national communities.

  2. Operational Management:

    • Oversee the daily operations of the gallery, ensuring efficient and effective execution of exhibitions, programs, and events.

    • Manage staff, volunteers, and contractors, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

    • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and best practices.

  3. Financial Oversight:

    • Develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring financial stability and growth.

    • Oversee fundraising activities, including grant writing, donor relations, and sponsorships.

    • Implement financial controls and reporting systems to maintain transparency and accountability.

  4. Program Development:

    • Curate and develop innovative exhibitions and programs that reflect the gallery’s mission and attract diverse audiences.

    • Collaborate with artists, curators, and community partners to create meaningful and engaging experiences.

    • Evaluate and assess the impact and effectiveness of programs and initiatives.

  5. Community Engagement:

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with the local arts community, educational institutions, and other stakeholders.

    • Promote the gallery through public speaking, media engagement, and participation in community events.

    • Develop educational and outreach programs to increase accessibility and inclusivity.

  6. Board Relations:

    • Work closely with the Board of Directors to support governance and policy development.

    • Provide regular updates on the gallery’s operations, financial status, and strategic initiatives.

    • Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and development of board members.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts administration, business, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

  • Minimum of 5 years of senior management experience in a non-profit arts organization or similar setting.

  • Proven track record in fundraising, financial management, and strategic planning.

  • Strong knowledge of contemporary art and the cultural sector.

  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including artists, donors, and community members.

  • Passion for the arts and a commitment to the gallery’s mission.
