Artist Statement

My paintings and drawings are from ideas that come to me through sight, memories and dreams. When an idea comes to me, it stirs up my imagination and my creativity begins to flow. An idea might become a quick sketch and it might just be a quick sketch and nothing more. However, it could grow into more sketches where my vision becomes clearer as to what the final piece might look like. At this point I ask myself what is the sketch saying to me and is it a good or bad memory? Does the subject look  like the first time I saw it. I ask myself does the image look accurate? What does this make me feel? After these thoughts my imagination takes me deeper into the subject and the drawings might change or remain the same. A landscape, animal, bird or a portrait is all started with a small idea that entered my mind. It is something I remembered, saw or dreamed and I want to save this idea. I then lay the foundation on paper, panels or canvas.  When the foundation is laid then I move in with color and texture and this could take days, weeks or months. The time is set by the painting or drawing and not by a clock or calendar. As an artist I allow the piece to tell what I need to do. After spending time building this piece, it is now ready to sign and to share with the world. I have no idea how the viewer will respond to the piece. I do hope the viewer will pause and look at the piece for a moment and I hope it might bring a memory or a thought back to them.

These paintings and drawings I have selected for this show are a variety of my work. Some might bring joy, some peace and some might even make you think.  My hope is that the viewer will receive some joy, hope or provoke memories.

Peace & Joy,

Gary Howse
